I paint my own fabric for clothes and am currently working with metallic paints.  Here’s green:

 The first picture is an area of somewhat dense paint and the second is the edge where the paint is much less thick.  I think the multi-colored shards are what make it a metallic paint.  I was able to compare to a green non-metallic paint made by the same manufacturer and those colorful bits are not present.


 Here is purple, with much the same colorful pieces embedded in the background color:

 It does not appear to have the same colored bits in it, though you can see that it is made up of different colors.

 I also looked at something called Edible Gold Glitter.  The ingredients are gum arabic, mica, titanium dioxide, and yellow, red, and blue food coloring.  Yum. The colorful bits in this look quite similar to the ones in the metallic paint, so I am guessing that the paint uses something like mica to achieve the metallic affect.

 Finally, this got me interested in what actual gold looks  like so I extracted some of the flakes from Goldschlager, supposedly real gold.

 Hmm, looks like a bunch of mountainous brown stuff with tiny little bits of gold.  Maybe those edible gold flakes in food/alcohol are mostly something that is not gold.  Some sort of substrate to hold the microscopic gold?

Metallic Fabric Paint

We are having a house fly infestation for some reason this Spring.  This one was a bit squished when I peeled it off the wall and put it on the slide.  But the lenses of the eye are clear.

 I took my foldscope on a recent trip to China and collected air samples of the smog by letting a slide sit on an outdoor table for an hour or by carrying it with me as I walked around.  This was so much fun and so easy to travel with that I am taking my foldscope with me on all my trips now.  It makes a great conversation starter!


 Here are some more of my China air samples.  Each slide I made had about 10-15 of these black gobs in different sizes.  FYI to be fair I also checked my air in the U.S. and there are no black things in the air where I live.

 I found a bug drowning in the water carafe at dinner in Nantes, France.  I tried to save it but it died anyway, so of course I whipped out my foldscope.  I expected to see some nice wings and legs but was amazed to stumble across the eyes staring back at me.  Note you can see all the lenses.

Vancouver and most of the southern coast of B.C. has been blanketed in smoke for the last few days from the numerous forest fires raging across the province.  We woke up one morning to a blanket of ash on our deck.

 Here’s a picture of the flower on the slide – unfortunately it has disintegrated quite a bit over time.  It is a small yellow flower that grows on trees in the area

 Below are two pictures of the area taken from a moving vehicle.  In the first, I think you can see one of the trees with the flowers.  The second has a bush with yellow flowers but that is not the same – we were told that the bush was invasive and the place we were staying had gone to a lot of trouble to eradicate it from their grounds because it was stifling native plants.  In contrast the yellow flowering tree is native and useful.
