Turtuk is a village and the headquarters of an eponymous community development block in the Indian union territory of Ladakh. It is a small village sandwiched between the Karakorum Range and the Himalayas, and one of the northernmost villages of India, close to the Line of Control between India and Pakistan.

The primary objective of the Empower ED program is to upskill teachers working across primary to grade 8 levels in Leh and Lakadh. The program aims to equip teachers with modern pedagogical techniques, effective classroom management strategies, and the
ability to cater to diverse learning needs.

As a part of this program teachers took part in a hands on activity that involved making observations using a toffee, a flower and a candle burning as a process. This was done to help them develop-
Scientific Method Skills:

  • Observation Skills: Enhancing the ability to make detailed and accurate observations.
  • Recording Data: Developing skills in recording observations in a systematic manner.
  • Forming Hypotheses: Encouraging students to make predictions about the outcomes based on their observations.

We then went on to explore the microscopic world around using the Foldscope, the teachers enjoyed the ease of using the tool. We made slides and observed the onion peel to begin with. The nature of the enquiry motivated these teachers to explore more samples and take pictures. They were enthused that using the tool and felt even grade 4 students would benefit from making these observations.
