On the fourth day, we observed the pollen of frangipani. The more beautiful the flower is, the more difficult it was for us to take its sample. You cannot actually see the pollen with your naked eye, so the tape with the sample looks completely plain. In the end, you are left wondering whether you have even collected anything or not.
After preparing the slide and adjusting the focus, I found some tiny structures that looked like germs. I was convinced that they were pollen grains until I realized that they were actually fibers stuck on the tape. After some more focusing, I finally found the pollen. Under the Foldscope, the pollen appeared as tiny transparent kidney beans or coffee beans scattered on the slide. They were much smaller than I had imagined and looked quite simple, but it was fascinating to think that these tiny particles are responsible for the reproduction of such a beautiful flower.
We also did a murder mystery activity. The murder happened in a castle where a man was found in a pool of blood. There were four people present in the castle: the wife, who had just come from the salon and was wearing a silk robe, a caretaker whose gender wasn't defined, a gardener, and a cook. As evidence, we had lipstick marks on a broken window, pieces of cloth, and hair samples.
For this activity, we observed samples of body hair, eyebrows, eyelashes, oiled hair, and clean hair. We also took samples of three different fabrics and one lipstick sample. It was a fun activity, and the observations were mind-blowing. The hair that appeared black to us was actually brown in colour under the Foldscope. The oil on the hair was clearly visible. The eyelashes appeared darker than the hair. The different fabrics had different fibres of different thickness, and even the lipstick sample revealed details that we could not have seen otherwise.
This activity showed us how much information is hidden in everyday objects and how microscopy can help us uncover an entirely different world.
