In the Exploring the Microcosm course at the Lodha Genius Program at Ashoka University , we used Foldscopes to observe stomata on the surface of a leaf.
Stomata are tiny pores surrounded by guard cells that help regulate gas exchange in plants. Through the Foldscope, we were able to identify these microscopic structures and observe their arrangement on the leaf surface. The guard cells around each stoma could also be distinguished from the surrounding cells.

Observing stomata helped us better understand how plants take in carbon dioxide for photosynthesis while releasing oxygen and water vapour. The activity also showed how important microscopic structures are to the functioning of an entire plant and allowed us to examine a textbook concept firsthand.
