Whenever I thought of Scientific explorers the first things that would come to mind would be Physicists, Chemists and Astronomers (personal bias). Growing up, I despised Biology so much that the only time I would actually bring myself to study the subject was a day before my exams only because I needed those marks. This hate for biology was because I found it to be a very dry subject; complex diagrams, boring definitions, rot learning is what made me distance myself from biology.
Another reason because of which biology was on the bottom of my hierarchy of interests was that I thought of it is a very inaccessible science. Sure, you can find biology all around you but to actually understand and be able to properly study it you need expensive microscopes and big labs, which would be very difficult for a student like me who’s still exploring sciences and wants to fulfil his curiosity.

Then on 8th of June, when I had my first “Exploring the Microcosm” class with Dr. Anupma Harshal at LGP 26, all this started to change. This change was caused by something I had never expected would bring it, a permanent slide of a mere Fern Rhizome along with an instrument called The Foldscope.

The Foldscope specifically has changed my view of biology entirely. Never had I imagined that I would be excited about this subject. But the fact that I myself can take samples from things I have wanted to explore in my environment and actually study them this easily has started to elevate my view of Biology as a science.
This tells me that science done in a practical way will always truly be the best feeling a human being can experience. To have a cheaper, portable and more accessible way to analyze science is what we all need.

The Fern Rhizome are the plant's true stems which are responsible for storage and propagation. We mounted a permanent stained slide of the Fern Rhizome and viewed at it through the foldscope with different lenses (50x, 140x, 340x).

Upon analyzing, we observe a brown spot in the middle covered with cross-sectional layers of pink, and blue. There are hexagonal cross-sectional layers at the end as well.
This observation has resulted in a new curiosity about microcosmic things which we often neglect in our day-to-day lives.
