Pollen grains under scattered light. Note the suspended nature of the grain structures.
The image show pollen from a purple flower (suspected to be lavender or lilac), under scattered light (generated using a mobile-phone flashlight). The sample was obtained from the plantations behind Bechtel residence at Caltech’s campus (1200 East California Boulevard, Pasadena, CA) around 7:00 pm local time (CA) on May 31st, 2019. The flower was cut using a scissor, and the pollen was extracted using a wet cotton swab.
Note the suspended nature of the extended pollen grains, as well as, the opacity of the different portions of the structure.
