As the marine research officer at ANET, I have
been involved in 2 coral reef ecology and marine conservation training
programmes for tour operators working in the frontline of the marine tourism
industry here in the Andamans. The first was in Wandoor in Feb-March 2019 for
boat operators, glass-bottom-boat tour guides and snorkelling guides operating
in the Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park. The second was in Mayabunder in
August 2019 for dive instructors and dive masters working in the Andaman dive
industry primarily in locations like Havelock and Neil Islands. Both trainings
were fully supported by the Department of Environment and Forests, Andaman and
Nicobar Administration.
The sessions involved presentations, activities and discussions. Each programme was preceded by a pre-training quiz and ended with a post-training quiz to understand the impact of our educational exercise. Due to their limited training in biology, we found that it difficult to teach our audience basics of marine plant and animal classification. The understanding of why coral are animals and why sponges aren’t coral, remained superficial and confusing. We feel this challenge can only be remedied by explaining the differences at the cellular level. By seeing first-hand the cellular differences, between plant and animal cells, porifers and cnidarians tissues, we might be able to better explain basic marine classifications. Such an understanding is vital to the professional growth of marine tour operators, divers and guides. Thus ANET is now on the lookout for quality fixed slides that can be used with the DBT foldscopes in our upcoming programmes. If anyone has any leads, please do share J
