My class was fascinated by all of the movement in the sample. In their classroom microscopes they could see very little. While out at the pond, they had an interesting conversation about how they’d never drink the pond water, but they’d drink from a stream that looked clear. It was an important teaching moment. They were shocked when they saw everything moving about in the sample, and we discussed that there’s much in the world that we usually do not take notice of or see. We also talked about the importance of safe drinking water. You’ll probably hear my students trying to figure out what they’re seeing. They’re elementary students just beginning to learn about microscopes and microorganisms (and loving it).
