Exchange of knowledge regarding use of Foldscope for analyzing the plankton samples was done under twining program with North East partner. In this context, Dr. Shamim Rahman, Scientific assistant in the Department of Zoology, Cotton University, Guwahati and his team visited Wetland Research and Training Center to gain hands on experience in using the foldscope to analyze plankton and benthos samples from Chilika. Due to ongoing alert issued due to cyclone Titli, it was not safe to enter into the lagoon and thus sediment and water samples were collected from docking yard through plankton net and Van Veen grab sampler. Samples were processed in the laboratory and observed under foldscope without preservation. From benthic samples, nematodes were mounted on foldscope, whereas live fragments of Spirogyra were observed in the plankton samples.

Spirogyra
Nematode: they adopt to every environment from marine to fresh water. They are parasitic and live on living material. They can regulate bacterial population and community composition. They play important role nitrogen cycle by way of nitrogen mineralisation.
Cladophora: Filamentous Ulvophyceae, branched algae and they don’t undergo conjugation. They are one of the main food for the fishes
