As part of the Foldscope project, we, two students and two teachers from Ekya School, J.P Nagar, were sponsored a trip to Imphal, a biodiversity hotspot, by the government of India.Our topic being medicinal plants, and imphal being a biodiversity hotspot, we could observe many medicinal samples and other ones too.We were also given the opportunity to share our experiences with students of schools and colleges who had already used foldscope before, and raise awareness about foldscope in places where they hadn’t known much about Foldscope.We even saw how well developed and updated their science laboratories were and it was a very stunning experience.
We also had special experiences like the privilege to spot sangai deers, go boating in a lake with floating biomasses on which we could actually stand or jump, being able to shop in the only market in the world completely governed and run by women, visit schools and colleges and spot other plant samples inside their campuses, like bottlebrush, ferns, water chestnuts and other samples like lichens, termites etc.
On the whole I feel it was a very productive and fruitful experience packed with learning and fun.I am sure all the teachers and students from all campuses, including ours, must have thoroughly enjoyed the trip.
