I've been spending some time with my girlfriend's family this spring, and in parking my car in their unpaved driveway, I noticed some still water sitting in a tractor tire track, containing a bountiful supply of filamentous algae! It struck me odd to see such heavy growth at this time of year, with freezing temperatures the previous night, and 20cm of snow in the forecast (winters stick around in Newfoundland). I picked up a small wad of the algae (intriguing my girlfriend, it's a wonder she sticks around!) and placed it under my foldscope 2.0. I managed to find some individual strands of algae, and could even make out chloroplasts!
I then showed my girlfriend's parents, and grandparents, who were all blown away by the small paper device capable of revealing the microscopic world sitting right under our noses.
