Dr. Madhumita Mukherjee

An introductory session on”Foldscopes” was carried out for 83 participants from all over India whocame to attend the six day residential Outreach Program “Understanding Science”at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research Bhopal from May 7 –12, 2018. A talk on “Foldscopes” (short history on microscopes, the need forfoldscopes, working, assembling) followed by the observation of a few slides through the foldscope made for an interesting session for the participants. The session also grabbed media attention.

OUTREACH &#8211; Introductory session on &#8220;Foldscopes&#8221; for high school students

Ahands on session on “Foldscopes” was carried out for 65 participants(31 girls and 34 boys) studying in the IX th standard in State Governmentschools from Bhopal, Dewas, Hoshangabad, Raisen, Rajgarh, Sehore, Shahpur,Ujjain, Bhauri, Bakaniya of the state of Madhya Pradesh. This was a part of athree day residential program organised by The Royal Society of Chemistry(India) and Salters’ Institute (UK) at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research Bhopal from July 3-5, 2018. The participants were thrilled to observe onion cells, blood cells, butterfly legs, honey bee legs,fern rhizome, frog blood cells and capture images of the same with their mobile phones with what seemed like a “toy” to them!

OUTREACH &#8211; Workshop on &#8220;Foldscopes&#8221; for participants of Salters&#8217; Chemistry Camp

A workshop on “Foldscopes” was organized on November 04, 2018 for 78 high school students from State Government Schools in the vicinity of IISER Bhopal.  The workshop taught the participants basic principles of microscopy (in local language) and guided them on assembling and using Foldscopes. This was a part of the Rashtriya Avishkar Abhiyan (RAA) flagship scheme (MHRD). The workshop was conducted by the student volunteers of RAA.

 Rashtriya Avishkar Abhiyaan (
 
 
 
 RAA) is an MHRD flagship scheme that aims at nurturing a spirit of curiosity and creativity for Science and Mathematics in school children from State Government Schools from an early age. Under this flagship scheme IISER Bhopal has been assigned a few schools to mentor in the nearby villages. Our student volunteers have been visiting these Government schools Saturday to conduct classes in Science and Mathematics since 2015. As the schools do not have labs a project was submitted to Department of Biotechnology, Government of India following its call for proposals in the category “Crowd-sourcing science tool” under a citizen science endeavour for using “Foldscopes” as educational and training tool in State Government Schools. The “Foldscopes” received from DBT are now being used by the volunteers as teaching tools in these schools.
