Introduction of foldscope

Different varieties of Hibiscus flowers were collected by Gurusimha from class 10 and we prepared the temporary slides of petal cells and pollen grains. The visitors we’re fascinated to observe the pollen grains with germinating tube.

Foldscope workshop @ Ashakiran Vidyalaya, Mysore

Foldscopes were introduced to II P U students in their Biology practical class @ Siddaganga PU College, Bangalore on 3ed January, 2019.


 The students prepared the temporary slides of onion root tip to observe the stages in Mitosis under the guidance of their Biology lecturer Mrs Roopa Patil.They were thrilled to find the interphase stage and telophase stage whereally cytokinesis was observed.

The B Sc students of NMKRV College for Women at Bangalore had the opportunity to explore the microworld through the foldscope in their Botany practical class in the lab.They observed the pollen grains of Hibiscus,archegonia of pteridophyta,pollinia of Calotropis,lichen thallus ,stomata etc.

 Fabric is made up of two set of yarns arranged together. The process of arranging two sets of yarns together to make a fabric is called weaving.                                                              Class 8 students enjoyed observing  the different arrangements of synthetic fibres like polyster,nylon,acrylic etc under foldscope in class room setting.

Stamen is the male part of the plant .It contains the anther and the filament. The anther release the pollen grains.The pollen grains contain the male gametes.

Bougainvillea -anther

Cockroach belongs to the phylum Arthropoda and have jointed legs.The body is divided into three parts-head,thorax and abdomen. Three pairs of legs are attached to the thorax.They have three joints on each leg which means they have 18 knees.


 The legs have the following parts-coxa,trochanter,femur,fibia and tarsus.All these parts were observed under the foldscope.

 Strawberry is red in colour due to the presence of the pigment anthocyanin. These pigments are made in plants by combining of a molecule of some type of sugar with a molecule of an anthocyanidin.Strawberries become red only during their ripening process during which sugar becomes  concentrated in the fruit.

Strawberry peel under foldscope

Malvaviscus penduliflorus commonly known as Red turk’s cap belongs to the family Malvaceae.The petals are red in colour due to the presence of the pigment anthocyanin. This bright colour of petals attract  the insects  for pollination.


 The petal cells when observed under the foldscope showed spherical cells with little intercellular spaces.

T.S of dicot and monocot leaf under foldscope

My curious students while studying the  composition of soil wanted to observe the soil water under the foldscope. But they could not locate any microbes in it.So i decided to keep the beakers containing muddy water along with some small bits of leaves so that they decompose and we could observe some microbes in it.It was almost a month and we decided to observe the water under the foldscope. OMG…to our suprise we could observe an organism which was little stuck to the  transparent tape and was struggling very hard to escape from it.We could also observe the internal structure and some movements.My students were totally thrilled and suprised to observe such a creature which developed in muddy water in the beaker kept in lab.I was totally excited and showed the organism under foldscope to most of the students who were playing games, teachers in the staff room and also to our principal mam who all were so curious  and surprised.I was able to take videos of the movement of the organism.This organism is Cyclop species which generally grows in fresh water.It belongs to the phylum Arthropoda and class crustacea.They are commonly known as water fleas.Am unable to upload the video but will do it soon.

This is the video of the crustacean which was observed in the sample of water kept in a beaker in the lab.The beaker was of muddy water with bits of leaves which was kept stagnant for a month. Can anyone help me to identify the species?

Students of class 8th were curious and wanted  to observe many materials under the foldscope. So the class of observation was of their choice. The materials they observed were :  1.Charcoal powder- Charcoal is black because of carbon.Any substance when burnt turns black because of the presence of carbon.Charcoal is used as a fuel.we could observe the flakes of charcoal powder which was black.

 2.Pencil lead(graphite)-There is no lead in pencils. The core is made of non toxic mineral called graphite. The pencil cores are a mixture of graphite and clay. By varying the graphite to clay ratio, pencil makers adjust the core hardness usually identified as HB, 2B etc.

Observation of materials of student&#8217;s choice under foldscope -Class 8

The color of the hair is due to the presence of two types of melanin- eumelanin and pheomelanin. Some hairs are dark due to the presence of more eumelanin and some hairs are light due to the presence of less eumelanin.


 Different samples of hair from class 8 girls were collected and observed under the foldscope and we could observe varying colours of hairs.
