When I think of a potato, I usually imagine fries, chips, or mashed potatoes—not something I would be looking at under a microscope! During the Exploring the Microcosm class at the Lodha Genius Programme, I got the chance to observe potato cells through a Foldscope. At first, I wasn't expecting to see much, but as I increased the magnification, I was surprised by how different the potato looked. What seemed like an ordinary piece of food turned out to contain fascinating patterns and tiny structures that are completely invisible to the naked eye. Here's what I observed at different magnifications.

At 50× magnification, the potato tissue looked quite different from the onion cells I had observed earlier. Instead of the rectangular cells, I saw a more irregular pattern. At this magnification, I could mainly observe the overall texture rather than specific details inside the cells.

When I increased the magnification to 140×, the small dots became much more noticeable. They appeared as tiny round structures packed inside the cells. The potato sample looked much more detailed and textured than it had at 50×. I noticed that the cells were closely packed and surrounded by thick cell walls.

At 340× magnification, the most interesting feature was the large number of round granules visible inside the cells. The cells themselves appeared larger, and I could clearly see that these granules were contained within them rather than scattered randomly. Compared to the onion cells, the potato cells looked much denser and more crowded because all the granules were present
