This is a close up of a down feather taken from a pillow. Down feathers are feathers that are underneath the outer layer of feathers on most birds. Down feathers are used for insulating the birds, which is a function that humans found useful for their own ends in cold weather. They are considered to be the simplest of feathers, in that they do not have structures that are as well developed as in that of flight feathers or other types of feathers.
