This is a mold that was growing from a slice of cheddar cheese. Molds growing on soft cheeses such as cheddar are ones that are not safe to eat, unlike those on hard or semi-soft cheeses. It is likely that the mold growing on this cheese was of the penicillium genus, which are fungi typically used for making cheeses, as well as the antibiotic penicillin.
