 As my new journey is about to start with Foldscope community and within my city Kirkuk. I would like to say hello to everyone and looking forward to know you. After a couple of days, I will do a workshop for Foldscope introduction so I need your advice. What would be like an ideal Foldscope workshop? Please share with me your experience.

 The reason why I am very interested in doing this is becuase I believe Foldscope will be the reason to draw the smile of discovery on face of hundreds of people in Kirkuk as a start but for long term definitely all over Iraq hopefully.

Making new friends!

 -a maker place in Iraq, Kirkuk- we are very excited and happy to announce the start of promoting for science era.
 <br/>
 By the empowerment of Foldscope instruments, we put long term commitment to share this learning tool with public all over Iraq. And introduce Foldscope to people especially students.
</p>
<p class="has-background" style="background-color:#b5f2dc">
 Officially we did the first 2 Foldscope workshops in (28-02-2019 &amp; 01-03-2019) by inviting people through our Facebook page to apply. Surprisingly in the first 10 hours, we got 19 responses and by 2 days only we had 44 applications.
 <br/>
 The target age was (5-11) because we wanted to reach families too. The total attendees were 35.

 Our workshop was like this: ( 2 hours long with a coffee break )
 <br/>
 1- Started with a brief presentation about living organisms in general then connect the topic with microorganisms and show the typical microscope and finally introduce Foldscope by comparing.
 <br/>
 2- Construction &amp; assembly of Foldscope
 <br/>
 3- Observation of simple slides.
 <br/>

 The atmosphere that Foldscope created was undescribable both parents and kids were fully engaged with Foldscope. The lovely scenes were so warm and that time I personally felt that I am so lucky to be the first one doing this in my country and looking forward to take it to everyone that has not met Foldscope.

 Foldscope is a valuable product for many reasons, during this workshop I realized something else, which it makes people close to each other literally because the moment you see something new you start smiling and want to show it to someone else (When you hold the Foldscope to make sure the other person will see exactly what you saw).

 I really would like to keep writing more about what I feel so I will make sure to include in my every post a section for what we feel when enjoying Foldscope. 🙂

 Every observation I make under Foldscope leaves me with many questions and curiosities about Microorganisms.
 <br/>
 The First thing every time I want to know is the name. So the interesting part is just beginning because the discovery is not done yet!
 <br/>
 The journey of data collecting is endless because no one knows what you will find along the way of searching for answers.

<p>
 I feel myself like a real researcher 🙂
</p>
<p>
 I will try to write down my questions and once I find answers will publish both of them.

Made another new friend!

 This time I wanted to take bigger step and organize for presenting the amazing Foldscope at crowded festival.
 <br/>
 Now after everything is done I am happily writing to you step by step the preparation for the festival, experience and lessons I learned. And of course about the festival it self. Happy reading

 The Idea &amp; taking in the reasons
</h3>

 After I deciding to do this I had to seek for college permission. Everything went very well, me and Foldscope could

 fully attract organizer’s attention. I asked for support in order to bring the perfect show to festival.
 <br/>
 Thankfully they were supportive and assisted me to prepare for the festival.

 Preparation before festival:
</h3>

 1- Make list of things I need for example ( Datashow – box for projection – assemble Foldscopes – Papers – design and print roll up banner – tables (3).

 2- Choose a good place ( I was in the entrance 🙂

 3- Set Team + divide roles. ( We ended up with 6 members )

 3- During the Festival
</h3>
<p>
 Finally it was the big day in 2019 – 04 – 06. As soon as I opened the roll up banner in the early morning people started asking about what’s this thing and I had lots of things to do and make final touches so I had to tell them to wait for the opening of festival. (I realize now if there was another one with me from the team could help me in this or I had to wait before opening the banner So this is lesson one).

 The order of tables was like this:

 it was for me and all 3 kinds of microscope ( Foldscope, Stereo and Antique) for comparing. I put also Foldscope parts and ready lab made slides kit. Just right behind me the Data Show was projecting at the wall.

 Impressions

 Foldscope was the topic of conversations. We created big impact and people was super impressed. Personally I see that my work has reached its goals and I learned many many things during past 10 days. It was really good experience for me and I am proud of myself for being part of this.
 <br/>
 If you ask me were there anyone who knew about Foldscope? Yes, I met only one person who knows already about Foldscope which is Shans she is from India, a lecturer at Pharmacy department. We decided to make Foldscope orientation next week for her students.
</p>
<h3>
 Lessons
</h3>
<p>
 1- Bring a good photographer ( I was super busy so I forgot to take some good pictures during the festival )
 <br/>
 2- Try to find someone to help you instead of doing everything by your self. Like in the preparation for the festival I was very busy so if you are 2 at least everything will go smoothly but they should know what you want and does not need to follow up after them.
 <br/>
 3- More training for the team if you are not going to do alone. ( Ours was very good) but in case of shifting roles, they should be able to handle it.
 <br/>
 4- I would like to make a solo presentation about Foldscope next like everything happens in one big table. ( The reason why I did not do that is because I know there are lots of people so it would be crowded and some may miss the show.
 <br/>
 5- Next time I will definitely add a wet mount I tried in the morning but run out of time to find live organisms.
 <br/>
 6- Maybe “make a slide” option would be also nice touch to the show so this one also will be added next time.

Introducing Foldscope in my college&#8217;s annual festival

<p>
 Hello Foldscope community, Let’s make some changes in the way we use this community. Usually being part of a challenge moves us to be active continuously and work hard. So what I would like to suggest is to turn Microcosmos platform to a Q &amp; A game challenge to fulfil a wish.

 The idea is that we do not just make posts when we viewed a sample &amp; recorded it. But it will be more engaging if we make wishes too HERE, YES ! So we can know each other much closer.

 Here is more explanation, if you have ever wondered to see something under Foldscope and tried to collect sample and did not work or you could not find the origin to collect or you do not have tools you need like Microtome. Make a post here and ask if anyone can do that ( its good to include pictures in your post so to know exactly what you are looking for).

My wish &#8211; Single-celled Vacuum

 We used to gather in every opportunity to meet and share the love and enjoy the good time all together with delicious meals. But this time’s reason was different! I wanted to change the routine and take advantage of being part of this big family. Guess what the topic was

Quick observation

 Watching this Wheel -head shape- animal for hours was so spectacular but sad at the same time because it was stock!

 In this picture below you can see an area which water is accumulated and left there because of a broken faucet. You can see Algae has grown there and of course hundreds of microscopic organisms.
 <br/>
 In my first try, I found Rotifer plus ciliates. Seems this place is perfect environment for microorganisms to grow.

 Some tips to find possible samples:
 <br/>
 1- If you are looking for wet mounts takes samples from pond that is not flowing. So the chances are higher to observe something.
 <br/>
 (Note* I am not excluding the samples from flowing dirty water or liquids you are free to take from anywhere you want and for sure there will be lots of things to see).
 <br/>
 <br/>
 2- For dry samples, it is good to put them in glass &gt; add water then mix well &gt; leave it 24 h &gt; finally take the new sample from the liquid. This will work mostly.
 <br/>
 <br/>
 3- Take many samples if possible from different spots.
 <br/>
 <br/>
 4- Regarding preparing the slides. Personally, I prefer using one plastic slide and casual Foldscope perforated paper slide.
 <strong>
  HOW?
 </strong>
 <br/>
 I use the paper one to add the sample and fix it to the plastic by a tape to have a good thickness final slide combined (paper + plastic).
 <br/>
 <br/>
 5- Try to add as much as small drop by pipette so you keep the lens clean.
 <br/>
 <br/>
 6- Gently tape the sample to the paper slide and try avoiding pressure so the sample does not be squeezed.
 <br/>
 <br/>
 7- If you are capturing the show bring a table and put the phone on the edge of table so the Foldscope be outside of table on air. This will help you to control Foldscope more easily and efficiently.
 <br/>
 <br/>
 8- Lastly: Please be patient and give your self a some time to triple check every corner and hopefully you will have lots of WOW moments!
 <br/>

Rotifer fighting so hard to be free / I am sharing tips on how to capture it too!

Foldscope&#8217;s science engagement project in Iraq recognised to participate in Falling Walls Engage program in Berlin.

<p>
 On Thursday 2019 – 11 – 28 we had a fantastic morning at Nasa’em Kindergarten with pupils age 4-5 years old. We started with a brief presentation as introductory to make the subject relevant to them. Later we did a hands-on practical demonstration and show them live mounts eg. Rotifer. And from prepared slides Fern rhizome under Foldscope.
</p>

 <strong>
  The objective
 </strong>
 was to introduce them to the microorganisms and make awareness for hand washing.
 <br/>
 <br/>
 The participants were very excited with what they are seeing so we asked them what do they think. The answers were like “We are going to tell our family and friends to wash hands and we want to have a Foldscope”
 <br/>
 And also some specific questions about the names and where do they live.
</p>
<p>
 Next week we will do another workshop with other participants and will visit a Primary school.

Iraqi Kindergarten pupils meet Foldscope

 I was about to leave home to do another workshop in school, interestingly by chance I found those interesting triple together. So it was a great sample to take and show to students.

 On 4th December we had a workshop in a new primary school for 4 &amp; 5 graders. Everything was as it used to be but after I finished the normal presentation and live demonstration.

  2 surprises happened naturally from the students
 </em>
 .

 1- One student asked if she can give a present! That was an unexpected request because I usually find students excited and curious but not so ready and eager to stand and present all what she learned and saw.

 I responded supportively and said okay let’s welcome “Furdos” to the front.

 While I was recording I could not focus on the camera a lot because she was not only talking about things that I told them but also she added lots of information from her experiment in the workshop.

 It was literally full workshop demonstration format what she performed!!

 2nd surprise was: After the workshop time finished, I could spend some time with some students that they asked their “Sports” Teacher to spend some more time exploring with Foldscope. Most students love “Sports” lesson in schools but for the first time ever I see the ones who attended the workshop prefered to have fun in a different way.

 On Feb 8, 2022/ I challenged myself to do science public outreach using Foldscope as a tool in my local community Iraq, Kirkuk for kids consistently without skipping a day.

Foldscope activity 21-day challenge

<p>
 Feb, 10th – 17:24pm/ Bringing science to street. I had to take the challenge to street and do everything -including taking pictures- by myself without team!
 <br/>
 This unplanned transition occurred due to couple reasons and it brought also many other unexpected incidences later -will share eventually within each day what happened-
</p>
<p>
 Two main reasons why I decided to take the challenge to streets and continued without the kids team:
 <br/>
 1- Originally I was thinking to go to parks and do the activities there but I had difficulty of transportation with all these kids team with me. So from sake of making things more doable and practical, I decided to take it for the kids in the streets.
 <br/>
 2- It was so much responsibility on me to manage team of kids as each one of their parents trusted me and I was responsible of their safety so I had to give up of that dream until next time instead focus how to create more efficient experience for kids in streets and make the challenge less stressful and doable for myself.
</p>
<p>
 I was feeling sleepy and not willing to do because I was tired and had long day so I wanted to do it next day maybe mostly I had this fear of doing something new and had no idea how to stop by and talk as stranger to kids but Alhamdulilah I did it and made my first ever street activity. I thought of Wearing masks, gloves, take hand sterilizer.
</p>
<p>
 I began in my neighborhood stopped by group were just finished playing football and I asked if they would like to see an experiment in science so I spent 1 hour with them doing the activity full of many wow moments and wonder.
</p>
<p>
 We took a wet real sample from the street and looked into it under Foldscope. The activity created real time impact on them.
</p>
<p>

Foldscope activity challenge Day 3

<p>
 Feb 12th, 15:00/  Full of excitement, I tried to make it to the appointment with group of kids who I met on (day-2) to meet up again for extended workshop. I was 5 minutes late, then after waiting around 20 more minutes it was unexpected no one showing up because I thought they will be there waiting before me.
 <br/>
</p>
<p>
 Obviously, I had moments of feeling low before I head on to find new ones. Also previous day’s story had impact on me so I did not have much energy to do it again on the street. As I was walking I had doubts and questioning myself why I am doing all this and for what? when it’s unnoticed and not backed up by any means even morally!
 <br/>
 The only drive for me -after I prayed afternoon prayer (Asr)- was to do it for sake of Allah, see the smiles of kids and potential future in case if one kid be inspired, I would say I did something at least and gave back to community.
</p>
<p>
 Thankfully, I gathered up myself and started my tour with some positivity. This time I was looking for kids playing near their homes so I ask them to call their parents to get permission first then do the activity to avoid any misunderstanding.
</p>
<p>
 About the activity.
 <br/>
 New group of kids were from different city visiting their auntie. They were so happy to be part of the activity during their visit to my city “Kirkuk” but also upset because they have not seen something like this happening in their city “Baqubah” which made them think this activity is some causal norm in my city and happens all the time the city. So I had to explain the reality which is not a norm yet and instead of feeling upset they can do similar thing when they go back home.

 The two siblings (girl and boy) showed so much excitement and were very interested to have one so I decided to give away the first Foldscope ever in street to go travel and reach new community hopefully.

  Couldn’t establish proper communication channel with the kids that I gave away Foldscope, I mean I lost contact with them after connecting over facebook. I should look for alternative ways to keep in touch next time.

 <li>
  Struggling with wet samples. Sometimes the microorganisms are not seen in the sample! I have no idea why lol. So for next time I decided to make kids have ultimate wow moments by preparing in advance a rich source.
 </li>
 <li>
  Repeat the objectives of the activity during the discussion and connect them to the topic. Let them conclude what they learned and observed.

Foldscope activity challenge Day 4

<p>
 Feb 13th, 17:00 / Gradually I noticed the duration of activity was decreasing day after another due to some reasons for example how I reacted to things happened and the expectations I had did not match the reality. I faced things I did not encounter them before nor thought of them, all made me feel less courageous compared to when I started.

 About the activity:
</p>
<p>
 The activity was 40m in the local garden for 3 kids. In the beginning I spoke to man who is responsible of the garden, he liked the idea and welcomed to do activity there anytime.
 <br/>
 There was kids sitting there near a booth he told them I will do activity in science they looked so shy and 2 of them were girls. I tried to make them feel safe and engage them personally in process.
</p>
<p>
 I stepped back and let them “own” the activity. They collected samples from around then prepared slides by themselves.

  Shorten long introductions in the beginning about what’s lens and how it works by giving example of glasses without going into much details.

  Audio record the of activity to have more details to reflect on.

  Reduce procrastination to do activity everyday and on time by simply putting myself out of the home.
 </li>

 Reflection:
</p>
<p>
 After this day, I remember unintentionally I was taking into consideration many things before I stop by kids regarding how I was so picky in choosing places based on:
</p>
<ul>
 <li>
  Avoiding closed/narrow streets.
 </li>
 <li>
  Trying to be away from the front of other homes.
 </li>
 <li>
  Less potential of adults interfering the activity.
 </li>
 <li>
  Much more public spaces where its crowded by people that others do not know each other so they won’t dare or care what’s going on to disrupt.
 </li>
</ul>
<p>
 Above points should not be the case and not taken into consideration of where to do science in society – as I was doing them unintentionally maybe to avoid confronting people or fear of being misunderstood-.
 <br/>
 Because deciding where to do street science should depend on:
</p>
<ul>
 <li>
  What you are looking for to achieve?
 </li>
 <li>
  Where you want to conduct your activity?
 </li>
 <li>
  How far to go to reach kids with (less or more) chances can try science in their lives?
 </li>
 <li>
  Who is the target audience?
 </li>
 <li>
  What time of the day?
 </li>
 <li>
  Number of visits needed to deliver the message and address activity goals?
 </li>
</ul>
<p>
 To do “science for society” it is good to start from where one feel most comfortable then slowly expand to more experience required areas.
 <br/>
 So its fine to be picky about places in the beginning until one gains more experience and ready to expect/handle any situation may happen.
</p>
<p>
 Levels of doing science in society from comfortable to street science “expect anything” level.
 <br/>
 <br/>
 Narrow scope workshops for:
</p>
<ul>
 <li>
  Close family.
 </li>
 <li>
  Big family and relatives.
 </li>
 <li>
  Friends and extended network.
 </li>
 <li>
  Transition to general public slowly start inviting people from public to little larger workshops to attend e.g. parents with their kids.
 </li>
</ul>
<p>
 Widen the scope and expand to:
</p>
<ul>
 <li>
  Schools.
 </li>
 <li>
  Public places e.g. Parks/Fun fairs, shopping centers etc.
 </li>
 <li>
  Street science (based neighborhood + near by ones).
 </li>
 <li>
  Villages.
 </li>
</ul>

Foldscope activity challenge Day 5

<p>
 Feb 14th, 18:30 / Topic: Mental Health of Science Communicator.
 <br/>
 Big shopping center + Bazaar (showcase event of products) = crowd of families with kids around. I wanted to spend time with my family and do the activity there. In first glance one may assume, that day was most productive one so far, yet it was opposite because I was not in the mood and less likely comfortable talking to people.
</p>
<p>
 I want to focus in this post about mental health of science communicator. What a capacity we would have if we could do multiple things and create big impact in short time. But that’s not how things get done in reality, we have to take action in small steps and sometimes so small that can bypass our moodiness yet powerful enough to reverse effect our mood to feel better post taking action. It’s kind of contagious states for mind to be in mood.
</p>
<p>
 Here is what I try:
 <br/>
 1- If zero mood.
 <br/>
 2- Do something could be done without mood.
 <br/>
 3- Check in if that gave some dose of mood to do the next one?
 <br/>
 4- If not, means a refuel is needed so time to chillaxing not feeling bad for not being in the mood.
 <br/>
 5- At the end of the day one thing is done at least so there won’t be a zero day inshallah.
</p>
<p>
 The conclusion from my experience is:
 <br/>
 It’s okay to have zero mood yet discipline enough to do ONE thing at least to prove you are not in the mood, if that’s the case fill up your energy by simply giving yourself time off.
 <br/>
 Otherwise, taking the FIRST action will lift your mood dose to do again and more so let it to increase your sense of accomplishment by small steps which generate small wins.
 <br/>
 Later I discovered, it turns our its the it second case more likely to happen mostly.
</p>
<p>
 Give yourself indefinite chances to do what you want to achieve.
 <br/>
</p>
<p>
 About the activity:
</p>
<p>
 Low mood day output results.
 <br/>
 I only talked to 5 kids that day and few adults, I am glad I did not break the chain of challenge and had 1 more productivity that day.
 <br/>

 I lost the track of posting consistently so here is another lesson for me when I am high I do not give word publicly without being sure about. I supposed to finish sharing the documentation of the challenge journey since beginning of April so hope anyone who was waiting for my posts everyday forgive me for this delay. This is another habit I am trying to have is building &amp; sharing online (projects, learn things) as I make small progress and do things consistently, I share step by step updates publicly with people.

 I will set new deadline target to hit and see if I am going to do it.

Foldscope activity challenge Day 6

<p>
 Feb 15th, 18:04/ Night shift street activity. It was dark already when I left home walking aimlessly hopefully to find some kids. Since I was late that day I tried to come up with more appealing excess to pass because I had long day and it was already getting dark so kids will be home etc..
</p>

 What did I do?
 <br/>
 I embraced that voice inside me and showed care by promising myself to have enough rest after activity.
 <br/>
 But then I had to deal with these new kind of uncertain thoughts as I suspected it will be trickier to do activity at night time and think how to not give any chance for new misunderstanding.
</p>
<p>
 About activity:
</p>
<p>
 In empty land between homes two kids were playing marbles. I had to carefully choose my words so they do not freak out and be afraid of me.
 <br/>
 Here is how I started the conversation/activity:
</p>
<ul>
 <li>
  Greetings (salam aleykum) with big smile.
 </li>
 <li>
  Ask about how they are and doing?
 </li>
 <li>
  Talk affirmatively like; they must be going to school and have science classes.
 </li>
 <li>
  Then I connect the activity from there to subject like; Let’s do an experiment to see things closer than it looks by using magnifier and get to know more about science. So I use objects around us to be familiar when I see they hold something in their hands I hand over them the magnifier to look at what they have so in our case they had marbles.
 </li>
 <li>
  After I show them the magnifier I will make smooth transition to foldscope by asking question; “who wants to see hidden creators that we do see with only our eyes or even the magnifier?”
 </li>
 <li>
  At this point I take out foldscope and make quick intro to what it is without going into any detail because the idea is to show them results and answer the question to gain more creditability.
 </li>
 <li>
  The first time I use phone camera to show them all together and slowly make them feel comfortable to step in and let their curiosity lead them and attract them towards the scene where it all starts wonderland.
 </li>
 <li>
  As I explain and involve them in the process I talk about other related topics like; 1- personal/community hygiene. 2- Observe think about things around us invented by humans as process of ( dreaming, acquiring education, doing experiments in order trying to make life easier). 3- How to use the gift that human has which is brain in most efficient way by feeding it with useful information, doing good at school and taking advantage of internet also as source to learn new skills.
 </li>
 <li>
  I try to end up the activity with call to action to start dreaming and learning more about what they want to be in the future. Also to try out new things as much as possible while they are young.
 </li>
