Question:
What will the Grasshopper intestines look like under 140x magnification?
Materials:
Tape, tweezers, gloves, safety glasses, clear fingernail polish, slide, cover slip, Foldscope
Steps:
A grasshopper was found in the school yard, caught with a piece of tape and brought back to the classroom. A knife was used to cut open the stomach and remove the intestines. The sample was placed on a slide and covered with a coverslip. A thin layer of clear fingernail polish was painted the edges of the slide and left to dry. The slide was placed them under the foldscope (using a camera phone) and the grasshopper intestines was observed.
Conclusion:
The intestines appeared yellowish with brown stripes and black spots.
