Una de las principales características de una maleza es que ellas producen grandes cantidades de semillas. Esta característica les permite asegurar la persistencia de la especie y su habilidad para infestar los suelos.
Todas las semillas tienen la capacidad de permanecer vivas en el suelo por muchos ciclos de crecimiento o temporadas. Las semillas de malezas en el suelo presentan una cubierta (tesla) dura e impermeable. Además, pueden presentar apéndices como alas, pelos, arilos , que están relacionados con la dispersión . Los pelos (Fig.1) son propios de semillas pequeñas.
