 Golden yellow-brown coloured raised spots were seen on the pods of pea. A sample was taken from the infected area and teased to separate out the cells. The slide when observd under a foldscope revealed several spores. On surfing the literature, the symptoms matched with those of pea blight.

 –  lesions on all plant parts, seedling blight and foot rot. Lesions initially are small dark flecks on the lower parts of the plant that enlarge under humid conditions. The lesions may reveal small dark fruiting bodies. Infected seed can shrivel or become discolored.

  Tagetes erecta
 </em>
 commonly called African marigold belongs to family Asteraceae is an easy-to-grow flowering annual that requires very little maintenance.
</p>
<p>
 Marigolds are known for their ornamental importance as well as for production of lutein, the yellow compound.  This is an important chemical for eye health, and some companies breed marigolds specifically to produce blooms rich in lutein.
</p>
<p>
 Lately flower size has increased and the foliage reduced commercially. Leaves are pinnately compound and leaflets are lanceolate, serrated. Flowers are single to double hybrids with large globular heads. Flower colour varies from lemon yellow to yellow, golden yellow or orange.
</p>
<p>
 Now a days dwarf varieties with prolific flowering are produced by using male sterile African marigold (
 <em>
  T. erecta
 </em>
 ) and French marigold (
 <em>
  T. patula
 </em>
 ).Golden orange marigolds were plucked from the college garden and their disc florets gently teased and fixed on a slide to observe under foldscope.

<p>
 Potato tuber is an underground stem which is vegetatively propagated. Each tuber bears eyes or nodes from which the new growth begins. Each eye bears buds from which the new stem emerges as a sprout and the sprouts give rise to new plant. Number of eyes and distribution is characteristic of the variety. Sprouts appear from the eyes of the primary tuber. The sprouts emerge after their dormancy period is over. The cut potato with an eye is the seed. A corky layer develops around the seed that prevents decaying.
</p>
<p>
 The potatoes bought from the market after a fortnight developed sprouts. I took a portion and cut thin slices to observe it under a foldscope. The suberized portions and the emerging young stems could be marked in T.S of sprout.

 An overwhelming response of the participants was seen in the
NSS camp on usage of foldscope. The participants were keen to exchange hands at
learning foldscope. The time paucity rendered preparation of only few sample
slides. The trainers tried to satisfy all the queries of the participants and
the enthusiasm of the participants was appreciable.

 I always wondered, why some vegetables are harsh in texture and feel something prickly in throat on eating. The answer came from my tiny, pocket friend – foldscope.
</p>
<p>
 A leaf was plucked from the brinjal plant growing in my kitchen garden to study the coarse and rough surface under a foldscope. Stellate trichomes were observed on the surface of egg plant leaf.

 Trichomes are epidermal protuberances on aerial parts of plant, that protect plant from excess transpiration, high temperature, and herbivore attack (Wagner et al., 2004). The morphology of trichomes is probably useful in distinguishing the various species of

 is a vigorous growing, annual vine with large leaves and a lush appearance. The vine climbs by means of stem tendrils. It bears either male or female flowers.

The trichomes were observed to be short or long,  multi-cellular, uniseriate, cylindrical with a tapering apical cell. These appeared to be glandular trichomes, as some exudation could be noticed at the tips.

 In the class room practical to test the presence of carbohydrates in food materials, I selected peanuts. The peanuts were soaked in water for about an hour to soften them and free hand sections sliced. The sections were dipped in iodine solution for 2 minutes and excess of stain removed by gentle washing. On fixing the section on a slide and observing through the foldscope, i could see blackish starch grains indicating the presence of carbohydrates.

Testing the presence of Carbohydrates in peanuts

<p>
 The practical on testing the presence of carbohydrates in peanuts proved out to be more then that. I had stained many sections using iodine solution. While exploring through foldscope, one of the sections showed fungal hyphae. The peanuts which looked fine and healthy from outside and good to eat had a pathogen hidden in it.

 Field visit to Botanical garden for GGDSD students was a great adventure for us. Foldscope has changed the perception – “learning can be fun’. There was a lotus pond in the botanical garden in which lots of scum was there. I had collected a sample for analysis through foldscope. The scum was not slimy and was spread in a large area of the pond.
</p>
<p>
 On taking a sample for observation, I realized it was like a dense biofilm. I teased a part of it with a little difficulty as it appeared algal filaments had formed a woven mass. The algal filaments appeared dead and formed a mat-like structure.

 Tomatoes bought from the store were stored in refrigerator. Two days later when I opened the basket, a tomato had rotted badly. I took out my foldscope and gently took a sample of the rotting tomato on a cello tape and fixed it on a slide. I could see a tangled mass of hyphae showing the cause of rotting to be a fungus.

 On sliding the slide I could spot a large number of spindle shaped conidia, depicting the presence of
 <em>
  Alternaria
 </em>
 . I was able to see chain of conidia in an acropetalous succession at some loci. Some conidia were uniseriate, multicellular, while some were multiseriate, multicellular. The tomato were probably infected with
 <em>
  Alternaria
 </em>
 and led to post-harvest rot.

 In literature I could gather up that sometimes over-riped tomatoes may develop black mold caused by
 <em>
  Alternaria alternata
 </em>
 . On fruits small, dark blotches or large sunken areas with soft, blackish fungal growth can be seen to be the cause of fruit rot. Sometimes black fungal growth may develop on pre-existing wounds or lesions leading to post harvest loss.

 Delonix belongs to fabaceae and is a tree of great economic importance. Leaves of Delonix tree are bipinnately compound. Each leaf bears 10-25 pairs of pinnae and each pinna bears oppositely arranged leaflets.

Using Foldscope in classroom teaching

<p>
 From Ropar Wetlands, the GGDSD team headed towards Pushpa Gujaral Science city (Kapurthala in Punjab). On the way we explored the biodiversity of Punjab.
</p>
<p>
 It is the biggest project of its kind in North India set up in 72 acres of Land in the heart of Punjab. Science city has been planned to inculcate the scientific aptitude and temperament in young minds.  The subject areas covered include Natural and social sciences, agriculture, health sciences, human evolution, ecosystems, Jurassic park as well as frontier areas like space, nuclear science, robotics and biotechnology.
</p>
<p>
 The students were apprised of the adverse effects of Global warming at Climate Change Theatre. From there we moved on to Dinosaur park, where the extinct Dinosaurs could be seen. The Space Planetorium and the Bird Gallery showing birds of different states was a favourite with all.
</p>
<p>
 All the explorations were a part of the Foldscope walk held to Ignite the young minds organized by FoldscopeTeam@GGDSD College, Chandigarh on 17th October, 2018.
