A class room practical to study molds on bread was performed
by 1
 
 st
 
 semester undergraduates.


 
 Target group
 
 – 20 students who worked in batches of 5 each


 
 Materials used
 
 –

<ul>
 <li>
 4 slices of bread (any brand)
 </li>
 <li>
 4 plastic bags
 </li>
 <li>
 Sealing tape
 </li>
 <li>
 Black marker
 </li>
</ul>

 
 Procedure followed –
 

<ol>
 <li>
 Each group took a plastic bag and labeled it
 </li>
 <li>
 Moistened the bread with wet hands
 </li>
 <li>
 Inserted the bread slice in the plastic bag and
sealed it
 </li>
 <li>
 Drew a grid of 5X5 squares on the bag with a
marker
 </li>
 <li>
 A and B groups kept the experiment in an
incubator  that was set at 25
 
 0
 
 C; C and D set the slices in refrigerator
 </li>
 <li>
 The experiments were examined each day and the
boxes in the grid for moldy growth noted down
 </li>
 <li>
 The experiment was discontinued after 5 days due
to excessive moldy growth in the sets kept in incubator, while the ones in
refrigerator had to be kept for 2 weeks for results to begin
 </li>
 <li>
 The moldy growth obtained was observed
using foldscope and the results are being posted on

Class room practical on bread mold experiment

The class was quite excited to post the results.
 
 


 Group B results show an entangled mass of fungal hyphae and
sporangia. Rhizopus was seen spreading all over with sporangia formation and
also the stolons were clearly visible.  The students were happy to perform the
activity and look forward for more foldscope-based activities. Curiosity-driven
learning is being welcomed by students in Botany classes @ GGDSD College,
Chandigarh.

Class room practical on bread mold experiment contd….(Group -B)

A
class practical on testing the presence of starch in food was performed using
Foldscope by students of 6
 
 th
 
 semester.


 
 Requirements:
 
 Potato tuber, razor blade, cover slip, water, iodine solution, microscope,
blotting paper, foldscope


 
 Principle:
 
 Iodine
reacts with starch and changes its colour to blue-black


 
 Procedure:
 

<ol>
 <li>
 Cut a thin section of a potato tube by
means of razor blade or gently scrap out a few potato cells
 </li>
 <li>
 Place them in a drop of water over a
glass slide.
 </li>
 <li>
 Observe under microscope. The cells of
tuber are seen full of starch grains.
 </li>
 <li>
 Pour a drop of iodine solution at one
end of the mount and drain out the water from other end by means of filter
paper.
 </li>
 <li>
 Observe the change in colour.
 </li>
</ol>

 
 Observations
 
 : The starch grains are seen to change colour to blue – black

 A mushroom seen growing in my kitchen garden was plucked and washed. I tried to take its spore prints as taught in my practical class. For 2 days, I placed the cap of mushrrom under a glass cover and obtained a spore print. The spore print thus obtained was used to study the spores of the mushroom.
