Finally got to see these guys live! I’ve been searching for them for quite some time…Vorticella are awesome ciliates that can quickly retract their long stalks when they are avoiding predation! It’s fascinating how they coil. I got interested ever since Wallace Marshall at UCSF gave a talk at the MBL about learning in stentor, which are another ciliate species that can contract under stimuli! Also, according to wiki, vorticella can control the mosquito population? The mechanism doesn’t seem quite understood but it’s cool nonetheless! Go Foldscope!
