I had never heard nor seen these before seeing it here! I initially thought it was a fungus, but it is likely a “stellate trichrome”. If so, these structures typically act as a form of plant defense against environmental stressors. They can also serve as a form of storage unit for heavy metals, thus serving a sacrificial detoxification vessel. Cool!
