Currently studying in the Modern School, ECNCR-Delhi, Vismay Anup is an amateur observer and an aspiring international relations consultant. He loves learning about and studying all sorts of organisms- whether it be microbial or not. Though starting slowly, he is excited to observe as much as possible and learn from other's findings as well. If given free rein, Vismay would be found in one of 6 places: His room, the library, the bookshop, the airport, the zoo and the nearest bio lab.

Hi! I am Vismay Anup, and I am currently a student of the Lodha Genius Program at Ashoka University. I am attending the Week 3 Exploring the Microcosm course. In this post, I will share my observations of specimens of a Fern Rhizome and an Onion Cell on a Foldscope 2.0.

Opening my Explorer Kit was amazing! There were a lot of tools, excluding the Foldscope itself. The Treasure cards, torch and slides with a preserved specimen amazed me. I thoroughly enjoyed observing the specimens.
Fern Rhizome
50x
Purple circles - Blue circles- Purple circles - Light Blue circles repeated till innermost cells
This is because the cells are stained with different colours
Outer cells have pentagonal/hexagonal structures, while the inner ones are more circular

The images are clearly magnified
The innermost cells are very round and black (like papaya seeds)
Pink and blue inner cells are quite round and open
The outer and transparent cells are rigid and quite large, and have straight cell walls.
The outermost cells are cut and dispersed without staining, thus they are semi-transparent.

Black (Innermost)
Packed very tightly together and quite
well- defined.

Purple (Outer)
Rigid cell walls are loosely packed together (gaps are visible). Dyed with pink and purple stain.

Blue
Very loose and light, with undefined cell walls. This leads to an optical observation that the cells are merged
