I was collecting a soil and mushroom sample and - surprise! - this earwig crawled out and started running around on my petri dish! I quickly grabbed my tweezers and put him on a slide with a 3X ring sticker (to give him room to move and not get smooshed by the magnets). This was not as easy as it sounds, though - he was fast!!

These images of the head and antennae (which were really long!) were captured with a Foldscope 2.0 and the 50X magnification lens plus 5X digital zoom on my phone.
These videos showing the mouthparts in action were captured with a Foldscope 2.0 and the 50X magnification lens plus 3X digital zoom on my phone.
Stay tuned for the mushroom posts to follow. This was just too good not to share right away!
