தமிழ் மாநிலத்தின் மரம் பனை மரம். இதனை தற்போது போற்றி பாதுகாத்து வருகின்றனர். கடந்த காலங்களில் (இப்போதும் கூட) இதன் இலைகளை கூறைகளாகவும் மரத்தின் சட்டத்தை வீடுகள் கட்டுவதற்கும் பயன்படுத்தி வருகின்றனர். இதன் கிழங்கினை தை மாதம் பொங்கல் அன்று கடவுளுக்கு படைத்து உணவாக உண்ணுவர்.
