My last post focused on the microscopic properties of the skin shed from a Carolina Anole's back. This one will take a close look at the skin shed from it's feet!
When I put this skin on a slide, my first thought was that it looked like a little glove! I was very happy to see that the skin maintained it's footlike shape. When I put the slide under my Foldscope 2.0, my first thought was that the scales made me think of a dragon!
This is the foot skin at 50X magnification:
Going up to 140X magnification using brightfield lighting makes it look as though the foot is glowing from within (like the inner fire of the dragon is waiting to escape!).
I also looked at the skin from the foot using darkfield lighting. This is at 50X magnification:
The last thing I did was to look at it with reflective lighting. It looks like clumps of jewels or crystals to me! These pictures were taken with 50X magnification plus 5X digital zoom on my phone.
I hope you enjoyed looking at these images as much as I enjoyed taking them! What reptile skins have you looked at with your Foldscope?
