 What does a feather look like up close?


 
 Thoughts:
 
 It basically looks fluffy. It looks like what it would look like from afar, except that it is very up close. It has black dots even though the feather was white. It looks like lots of fiber.

 What is inside a crayon?


 
 Thoughts:
 
 It looks like big paint blotches. It looks really thick and creamy, but the edges were thin. It looked sticky even though I know that it is really hard.

What is inside a crayon?

Question of 6-year-old:
 
 What does a plant look like on it’s insides? (Made slide of both Kale and a pink Poinsettia.)


 
 Thoughts on Kale:
 
 Well, it was hard to see through, but mommy found the edge of it which was thinner. When I looked through, I could see all these like little dots. They were called cells.


 
 Thoughts on Poinsettia:
 
 Daddy helped me create this slide. We explored both the pollen and poinsettia leaf. Some parts of the leaf were green and some were pink. When I looked closely to the green leaf I could see the water going through the cells. When I looked closely to the pink leaf it was not really pink but an optical illusion of red and white mixing – the color was like little dots. The pollen was all dotty and like little ovals. It was very yellow. When I looked at one part, it almost looked like the little grains of pollen had been made into the shape of a lion.

What does a plant look like on it&#8217;s insides?

Question of 6-year-old:
 
 What is in my breakfast? (slides of 2% milk and gala apple)


 
 Thoughts:
 
 We explored the flesh and the skin of an apple. The flesh was mushy and almost like a spiders web. In it were these floating things and water droplets. The skin was red and pink. The milk was like ice – creamy and bumpy. It made some really pretty pictures.

 What does mommy’s design work look like? (a sample was taken of a printed coated sheet of paper)


 
 Thoughts:
 
 It looks like lots of little dots – that are so small – put together. The dots make up bigger images from far away. Mommy told me the dots were four different colors which make up all the colors that we see in the big picture — an optical illusion.

 Could you drink fish tank water?


 
 Thoughts:
 
 NO!! I would not. But the fish seem to love it. I would not drink it because not only do I know that it is dirty, but it looked really dirty too.

Question of a six-year-old:
 
 What are the difference between my hair and nails and my cat’s fur and nails?


 
 Thoughts on nails:
 
 You could see lots and lots of details on the cats nails. It reminded me of tree bark or art work you can see printed on fabric. My nails were see through but more brown than white like they look like on my fingers. They were a smoother structure. Daddy wondered if this was because the cats nails shed and my nails were clipped. Mommy wondered if the differences were because the cats nails were round and human nails are more flat.


 
 Thoughts on hair and fur:
 
 It was interesting how the cat hair was black, but not completely black. It was funny because the place were mommy got the hair out seemed only black, but under the microscope it was amazing to see the other colors you could find. Some strands were solid black and others had stripes. Even though she is a black cat, it is almost like an optical illusion looking at her from afar verse up close. My hair you could barley see at all as it is blond and has no color.

6-year-olds thoughts:
 
 So today my mommy asked me: “what is my favorite slide so far?” Of course I said a bugs wing, because it is a part of a bug!


 I am learning about Picasso and his different styles: blue period, rose period, cubism, and so much more. In cubism Picasso wanted to see every side of anything that you could imagine. He made paintings out of what he saw.


 Mommy has asked me to be like Picasso and to sketch the bug from different sides and to sketch what I saw through my scope. Here are my bug sketches:

What is my favorite slide so far?

6-year-old thoughts:
 
 Today mommy told me about different types of art. We discussed portrait (a picture of a person), landscape (a picture of a place), still life (a picture of stuff), and illustration (a picture to tell a story). We looked at lots of different types of art.


 I especially liked a landscape painting on a canvas with orange sunset in the background with lots of autumn trees by a stream or river. The picture was called

What slides look like a landscape?

Thoughts of a 6-year-old:
 
 Today mommy sat me down with a book of American Modernest artworks. She asked me to flip through and choose a picture that resonated with me. After asking what resonated meant, I got to work. I found a very pretty picture. Mommy asked me: “What drew me to the picture?” Here is what I told her:


 1) You could not really see what it was but when you stopped to look, you could see it was something inside of something else. It interested me.


 2) Thinking about

 it did not seem like a portrait, illustration or landscape and it did not seem like an abstract. And I liked that.

 Here is what mommy told me about the artwork after I told her what I thought. The art is called “Sunset” by artist Milton Avery. He made it in 1952. It depicts a sea scape – one of his favorite subject matters. She said he like to take the real and abstract it by use of simplified irregular shapes.

What does Milton Avery have to do with my slides?

6-year-old’s mom here:
 
 We are wanting to explore the frozen world under the FoldScope. Successfully froze water on a slide, but there was really no “wow” feature to what we saw. (6-year-old said it looked just like water!!)


 Do any of you have some ideas of what a 6-year-old and a mom can do with materials found around the home to 1) study the frozen world and 2) study crystals via the Foldscope. In reference to crystals, I did see a post about colored sugar which was cool. Please let me know if there are any other ideas.


 If it helps I have a deep freeze freezer which we keep at -25. Also we have old snow in our freezer.

 Thoughts of 6-year-old:
 
 Yes we can! But it did not really work out the way we had planned it. The bug died before we could get any video of his heart or breathing. Yet, we did get some good pictures.


 
 Question of mom:
 
 How did we get the bug?


 
 Answer of 6-year-old:
 
 Mama got two little green bugs off some lettuce she was washing for dinner.
 
 The bugs were VERY cold and almost dead because of they had been in the refrigerator.
 
 The lettuce was butter head lettuce that had been grown through hydroponics: which means grown in water in a very big green house with lots of bees.


 
 Question of mom:
 
 How did mommy get the bug on the slide without squashing it?


 
 Answer of 6-year-old:
 
 She picked them up with a sticky Foldscope cover slip.


 
 Question of mom:
 
 What did you see?


 
 Answer of 6-year-old:
 
 A head, the body, hair on legs, and some very cool, long antenna.

 Look at the fish under a foldscope, of course!


 
 How did you do that?
 
 We put the fish in a baggie, and then put the baggie under the foldscope.


 
 What kind of fish did you examine?
 
 A freshwater fish called a lemon tetra. Her name was Tinkerbell, and she was about an inch and a half long.


 
 What did you see?
 
 I saw an organ, the eye, fins, and color within the fish scales. It was interesting that you could not see the color of the fish to the naked eye in the same way as you saw it under the foldscope: it looked like when we tested

Question:
 
 If you were an illustrator of the movie “Frozen,” what type of crystals would be your inspiration? Before you begin you have to study crystals under your Foldscope. (This will be an ongoing project of many blogs so check back for the full experience!)


 
 6-year-old:
 
 
 First I studied ice pellets from a winter storm.
 
 They were round in shape and sparkly.


 
 How did you make your slide?
 
 I did not make a slide. Mommy and I dumped the ice pellets inside of the Foldscope!


 
 Were the ice pellets clear all the way through?
 
 NO. They kind of looked like a fossil – maybe one from a dinosaur.

 What did you study next?
 
 
 I studied salt crystals. I will call these “salt #1.”
 


 
 How did you make your slide?
 
 I made a cold solution of salt mixed with water. Then I put two drops of the salt water on to the middle of my slide. We had to wait overnight for the crystals to form and dry completely. But then we waited a little bit longer just to make sure it was dry before checking them out under the Foldscope.


 
 Did you use a cover slip?
 
 No.


 
 What did they look like?
 
 They looked nothing like the ice pellets. The ice pellets were round shaped but these were kind of square. In most places it was bumpy, but in a few places it was smooth.

The Frozen Project: Part 1

Today we continue The Frozen Project: a 6-year-olds study of crystals…


 
 What did you study next?
 
 
 Sugar crystals. I will call these “Sugar #1.”
 


 
 How did you make them?
 
 It was sugar plus water, but it was a hot solution. So we melted the sugar into the water. Before we used the simple sugar solution, we let it cool.


 
 What did you do with the sugar water solution when it was cool?
 
 We put two drops of the solution on the slide and put a cover slip on top.


 
 What happened next?
 
 We had to wait and wait and wait and wait and wait for the solution to dry and crystals to form.


 
 What were these crystals like?
 
 They were flat and beautiful. Some grew from beyond the cover slip. They were glittery.

 Did you study something else?
 
 
 I studied salt again. I will call this “Salt #2.”
 


 
 Why did you study the salt again?
 
 When we did the other salt experiment, mommy forgot that crystals grow up. So after we finished the first salt, we decided to study salt which was flat instead.


 
 What did you do differently from the first salt experiment?
 
 We put a cover slip on the salt sample.


 
 How were these images different from the first salt images?
 
 Some were more square and some made beautiful leaf patterns.

 Did you do try sugar without a cover slip?
 
 
 Yes. I will call it “Sugar #2.”
 


 
 What was the difference between sugar #1 and #2?
 
 Like the first salt without cover slip they grew upward on the slide causing them to be thick and chunky where in contrast sugar #1 was thin and elegant.

 What happens when it snows?
 
 You study what comes down!


 
 What did you find?
 
 Snow! But two different kinds:
 
 Wet snow which I will call snow #1 and dry snow which I will call snow #2.
 


 
 First, how did you make your slides?
 
 We dumped the snow on the Foldscope. No slide. No slip cover.


 
 What was the wet snow like?
 
 It was in very abstract shapes. It was drippy. And very hard to get a picture of before it either melted or fell of the Foldscope.


 
 What was the dry snow like?
 
 The dry snow was amazing!!!! We saw actual snowflakes including a hexagon shape. You see, snow flakes start with drop of dust to which water drops stick. They stick in the shape of a hexagon. The longer they grow the bigger they get. Mommy showed me a picture of how the hexagon builds sticks at the corners and then adds on other hexagons. It is pretty cool.

 Why has it been so long since you posted?
 
 My crystals took a long time to grow on my slide – two weeks to be exact!


 
 What did you grow?
 
 Maple Syrup crystals. I will call these Maple Syrup #1 and Maple Syrup #2.


 
 How did you create Maple Syrup #1?
 
 It is easy! I just put a drop or two of maple syrup on a glass slide. I did not use a cover slip.


 
 How did you create Maple Syrup #2?
 
 I basically did it the same way, except I put a cover slip on to see how that worked.


 
 What was visually similar between the two?
 
 Within the crystals in both samples there were little lines. Some of the lines were thick and chalky and some were like little marks that you make with a pencil.

 These lines looked like the markings on a bug we previously studied.

 Both samples were very angular.


 
 What was visually different?
 
 Maple Syrup #1 had thicker or chunkier crystals and Maple Syrup #2 had thinner more defined crystals.

The Frozen Project: a 6-year-olds study of crystals continues with help from @laksiyer…
 


 When we started The Frozen Project @laksiyer suggested we study sand—so we did!


 
 Where did you get your sand?
 
 Some came from the beach and some came from our sand box. I will call these Beach Sand #1, Beach Sand #2, and Play Sand #1.


 
 What did the sand look like?
 
 Well some pieces of sand looked more square, some looked more like circles – they were unusual shapes. Mommy called them irregular. The sand acted like prisms and made miniature rainbows. (Though that is hard to capture on film.) I also noticed the sand looked like our wet snow samples.


 
 Did the beach sand and play sand look different under your Foldscope?
 
 They almost looked the same, except the beach ones had tiny shell pieces in them.


 
 How did you create your slides?
 
 Beach Sand #1 was made by sticking sand to tape/foldscope cover slip and then to a glass slide. I noticed the tape we used had texture and caused the sand images not to be so clear – so mommy suggested we try the foldscope cover slip. The foldscope cover slip made clearer images. Beach Sand #2 was made by picking up little bits of sand and putting it on a glass slide without a cover slip or tape. These were the clearest images so for Play Sand #1 we did the same thing: sprinkle sand onto the glass slide.

The Frozen Project: Part 5

The Frozen Project: a 6-year-olds study of crystals continues, but today we are going to share some of our bloopers. Maybe you can offer ideas of how to turn these bloopers into success…
 
 


 1) We tried to examine ice cream. We froze a slide and put the ice cream on it, we put ice cream directly on the Foldscope, we put ice cream in a baggie, we tried strawberry and chocolate ice cream, we even froze the Foldscope. The outcome: sticky yummy fingers—they sure did taste good.


 2) We tried to look at a prism and capture the separation of white light into a rainbow. Well, a prism is glass, and we saw straight through it. No separation of light. The outcome: pretty dancing rainbows on our walls but not on the Foldscope.


 3) We tried to make frost by filling a baggie with a glass slide and our warm breath then putting the entire thing in the freezer. The outcome: nothing on the slide.


 4) We tried to make frost by mixing rubbing alcohol with water and dropping this mixture onto a glass slide and putting the entire thing in the freezer. The outcome: noting on the slide.


 5) We tried to examine an ice sickle in a baggie and just on the Foldscope. The outcome: water. Though we could see a little bit of the ice sickle it acted more like glass: it was pretty much see through. (We are starting to run low on ice sickles.)


 
 Any ideas or suggestions? Any other simple crystal experiments to try before we conclude our project?

 Mr Manu suggested we study sea water, but we are not close to the ocean. So what did you study instead?
 
 Fish tank water for our fresh water fish.


 
 I thought you did that before?
 
 Well, I did but that

 water was wet.

 This time we let the water dry on a glass slide into crystals.


 
 Wow, that sounds cool! How did it turn out?
 
 
 Very good.
 


 
 I am excited tell, me more.
 
 In some places the crystals made dots, in other places the crystals made lines, in other places they looked like the edges of snowflakes, still in others the crystals made little landscapes.

 So what have you discovered under your Foldscope?
 
 A prism. (The prism I studied was from an old chandelier, and it was a man made glass crystal.)


 
 I thought you tried that before and it did not work like you expected?
 
 Well, last time it was more of a grey day when we tried it. So all we could see was the clear glass and not the separation of light. But this time it was a very sunny day. So we could capture the separation of light.


 
 How did you did you examine the prism?
 
 We taped it to the Foldscope. Check out my drawing to see what I mean:

 Was it easy to do?
 
 No. That is because it is hard to get the light through the Foldscope lens hole and into the prism at the right angle. We had to be very patient to make white light bend into colors.


 
 What were the results?

 Have you explored anything else?
 
 Yes, alum crystals.


 
 What’s that?
 
 Vegetables and watermelon rind that is used for pickling. (You can find it in the spice section of the store.)


 
 How did you make the crystals?
 
 I mixed the alum powder into warm water. I kept adding powder to the water until the solution would not dissolve more of the powder. Then I put the solution on my glass slide. It took about 2 days for the solution to dry and crystals to form on the slide. Here is what my sketch looks like of what I did:

 1) I was very inspired by Mr Manu to grow Vitamin-C crystals. Check out his blog

 . Mommy and I read the blog, put on our shoes, and walked to the grocery store. Within an hour we had Vitamin-C and started our experiment. Days past and I went to check the slide. It looked pretty cool until I got it under the foldscope. All I had were unamusing dots that could not help us with our crystal project. Mommy and I spoke to our great friend “Dr. Matt” who told us more about Vitamin-C. He asked if we had purchased pure Vitamin-C or if there other ingredients in the sample. Our Vitamin-C had other ingredients. He said that the reason I had not grown any crystals was because there were other ingredients mixed with our Vitamin-C. He said the Vitamin-C sample needed to be 100% pure to be successful. Mommy and I have not found 100% pure Vitamin-C so can not complete the project.


 2) While mommy and I were at the store, the pharmacist suggested I try Epson Salt crystals. She told me how to grow them in two different ways: 1) with water and Epson Salt mixed together and 2) with water, Epson Salt, and food coloring (blue was used) so you could see the crystals better. The clear ones looked very crystally on the slide, but under the foldscope the structure was so thick I could not see through it. It was like solid white fluff balls. The blue crystals, just like the white ones, looked very cool on the slide – maybe even cooler! Unfortunately they slid
 
 right off
 
 the slide so we
 
 could not
 
 explore them.


 3) One night we found crystals on our counter – mommy’s theory was that it was from the
 
 hand soap
 
 that had spilled on the butcher block counter. So we tried to recreate these type of crystals on a slide. We had to wait a lot of days. It looked crystally, but us we were trying to put it under the Foldscope it sample turned to mush. Mommy thinks that the crystals form on the butcher block counter because of some reaction between the soap and the wood which creates the crystals – she also thinks the glass was preventing the same reaction.

 I poured a little out of the box and into a bowl of water. I mixed and added until the water could not hold any more. Then I squirted some of the solution onto a slide and let it dry.


 
 Interesting! How did the slide look to your naked eye?
 
 It looked like puffy round marks. Something like ant hills.


 
 How did the slide look like under the Foldscope?
 
 It was kind of neat! I saw triangles and round tubs with points and curls on the ends. I even saw parts that looked like a straw with a bendy top. Altogether interesting shapes!

 Hail Stones.


 
 What, Hail stones??
 
 Yes. Suddenly there was a big BANG of thunder. And it got very dark and windy and humid outside. And suddenly little pitter-patters were heard, and they were hail stones!!


 
 Wow! So you explored them under your Foldscope?
 
 Yes! I dropped them directly on the Foldscope to look at them. And to make the photos we laid on our backs and looked up to the sample.


 
 Tell me about the results.
 
 
 
 Very beautiful!!
 
 
 They were very sparkly and made rainbows like the Prism and Alum. We even saw in one stone the speck of dirt which started the stone.

 Good morning! What have you been up to?
 
 Studying ice cream. I looked at both vanilla and chocolate ice cream. (Idea thanks to @
 <cite>
 laksiyer.
 </cite>
 )


 
 That sounds yummy!
 
 Well, I did not eat it!


 
 What did you do with it?
 
 About three weeks back I took a slide and put ice cream on it. I let it melt and added a slip cover. Mommy and I froze it over night and then added tape to the edges of the slip cover. Then I let it refreeze multiple times. So today I took the slides and looked at them under the Foldscope. (Mommy and I learned through experimentation, that the slip cover and tape are important so that the ice cream sample does not fall off the slide while it melts.)


 
 What did the ice cream crystals look like?
 
 The ice cream was very different than I had seen before. They had lots of circles and “peeker” holes. They had very subtle color. Also you could see the ice cream melt into bigger circles.


 
 What makes these findings different from the other samples?
 
 Most of my other crystal samples were angular. The only other crystal samples that were similar with more circles would be the wet snow and salt which had three dimensional circles.

The Frozen Project: The Conclusion

Today starts my summer vacation. So I will take a little break from my Foldscope. I have enjoyed the whole project. Thank you, Mr Manu, for letting me and mommy beta test.


 6-year-old

Thank you Mr Manu

6-year-old successfully assembled and explored fibers from a ribbon with both low and high lenses. Tried daylight verses incandescent light. Love the feature of attaching Foldscope to a camera. Noticed the images were clear through the viewer than through the camera. Have not tried projecting images from Foldscope yet. Very excited to start!

Assemble and Start

Since the Foldscope arrive, my 6-year-old has started asking more and more questions. I will post each question as we explore them. I will also document her comments:

 Thoughts:
 
 There are drippy marks. It looks like clear see through dough with air bubbles that has been rolled out with a rolling pin. One picture looks like the dividing between water and sand — like what you see at the beach.

 Why can you not exactly see the real things when you looked through the scope? (the H2O)
