The Frozen Project: a 6-year-olds study of crystals continues…

Why has it been so long since you posted? My crystals took a long time to grow on my slide – two weeks to be exact!

What did you grow? Maple Syrup crystals. I will call these Maple Syrup #1 and Maple Syrup #2.

How did you create Maple Syrup #1? It is easy! I just put a drop or two of maple syrup on a glass slide. I did not use a cover slip.

How did you create Maple Syrup #2? I basically did it the same way, except I put a cover slip on to see how that worked.

What was visually similar between the two? Within the crystals in both samples there were little lines. Some of the lines were thick and chalky and some were like little marks that you make with a pencil. These lines looked like the markings on a bug we previously studied. Both samples were very angular.

What was visually different? Maple Syrup #1 had thicker or chunkier crystals and Maple Syrup #2 had thinner more defined crystals.
