This is a video through a foldscope of a pond sample that was scooped from the top of the Turtle Pond at Caltech on April 10th, 2019 at 6:20 PM PST.


 The magnification of this video is 140x, and there is a tiny amoeba (domain Eukarya) swimming around the air bubble on the left side of the video. We determined this organism to be an amoeba because of its constant motion and size (approximately 250-750 microns) (not bacteria/archaea).

 The pollen was collected in two steps. First, I took the flower and gently tapped it against the glass slide to get some pollen on the slide. However, the conditions were slightly wet, so I took the end of a clean chopstick and gathered some pollen from the stamen of the flower and smeared it onto the glass slide. Finally, I placed a drop of water onto the slide and used its adhesive properties to put the coverslip in place.

 The magnification of the foldscope is 140x, and the diameter of the field of vision is 400 microns (5.5cm/140), so we calculate that the size of the pollen grains range from 10 microns to 30 microns in diameter. The bottom grain of the three large pollen grains in the first quadrant of the image would be 20 microns in diameter.

Here
we see a close-up of pollen from an agapanthus plant in Avery Courtyard. We
observe that the pollen grains resemble grains and are elliptical. The sample was
obtained in Avery Courtyard Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 PM. The pollen was taken
from the stamen of the flower and rubbed onto the glass slide, taped over, and
covered with a coverslip. #caltechbi1

Here
is a close-up of the stamen of a star jasmine flower from inside Avery
Courtyard. We observe that the stamen is translucent and has curved edges. The
sample was obtained in Avery Courtyard Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 PM. The stamen
was taken from the inside of one of these flowers and placed on a slide with a

 Here is a close-up of the seeds of a dandelion while it
still looks like a puff-ball. The sample was obtained in Avery Courtyard
Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 PM. We observe that the dandelion looks very wiry and
hair-like under magnification. We blew the dandelion, making some of the seeds
fall onto the glass slide, taping them down, and we covered it with a

 Here is a close-up of the stamen of a rose from Avery
Courtyard. The sample was obtained in Avery Courtyard Tuesday afternoon at 3:30
PM. We picked out the stamen from inside the flower, put it on the glass slide,
taped it on, and covered it with a coverslip. We observe the tubular structure
of the stamen and the head, which contains the pollen. The head is shaped so
that the pollen can easily disperse. #caltechbi1
