The new foldscope has a reflective lighting feature. There is a wonderful video on this.
I realized that this reflective lighting gives great dark-field views. Look at the ones below. Here I have two giant ciliates, Bursaria and Spirostomum and they light up nicely in the dark background. Bursaria is a giant-killer, you can see Spirostomum in its food vacuole. More on these two in my next post.
Here is the same sample under the regular configuration of the light module for transmission light in Foldscope 2.0.
Both these giant ciliates have some interesting biology that I will write about sometime in a future post.
