A cool chat with Manu at IIT, Bombay and a walk 2the lake led us to explore the greens around. Woah we are near a swamp in the campus, close to the Powai lake n what better to collect a sample and observe.
On observations we see it teeming with our dear friends who are dancing, moving across, doing the twiddle dee twiddle doo dance n more. A closer look revealed some of the bacteria to be dividing, some also showed up with spores. While I was speculating the larger moving ones to be paramecium using this as my reference point (https://youtu.be/q6B2sR3awSE?si=g0NDHogpS8X3HADm) a small discussion lead me to explore further.
Inputs from Manu- the way they turn (at a point), and the greenish tinge....they are euglena. Look very closely to the tip, you will see a fine red dot - which is the « eye spot » in Euglena.
Indeed at 2.3 x phone magnification and 140 x Foldscope 1.0, they appear filled with green dots. There are also smaller entities that look like Colpoda, but needs more confirmation. More coming up on this....
